Here’s to our Shiny and Subtle moments in 2025!
It might not come as a surprise that I have a yearly appointment book that I write everything down in. Yes, I’m in the whole Google/Microsoft Workspace constantly, so the act of opening a book, feeling the pages, writing down stuff just makes me feel good, damn it.
It’s grounding as I flip through the weeks and months of 2024 seeing bullet-pointed notes and strikethroughs (clearly indicating Shiny moments of accomplished goals) alongside random thoughts, happenings, arrows, hearts, and exclamation points (indicating all those everyday Subtle life moments). All of it taking me a bit by surprise, reminding me, “I really am a life.”
Shiny moments…
- Bringing EFGO to NYC
- Having one of my family stories published in a wonderful parenting anthology
- Creating an adoption-themed storytelling show for a nonprofit that I care deeply about
- Formally becoming part of the team for this nonprofit
- Asked to present at a parenting group
- Reconnecting with people who are so generous with their time and talent
- Meeting new people who are so generous with their time and talent
Subtle moments…
- Weekly visits to hold my dad’s hand
- Planning time to be with my mom
- Seeing my brothers when they come to town
- Being with my best friend Dawn wherever, whenever
- Making time for a glass of wine with girlfriends
- Seeing FB friends in real life
- Work deadlines
- Dropping and picking up the Teen
- Cleaning the house, doing laundry, food shopping
- Having dinner as a family, if only for 10 minutes
- Telling the Teen “I love you” (and hearing it back – whaa??? This should be on my Shiny list)
- Daily caring for my cats and dog and that foot-long goldfish
- Getting a good cut and color at a good price to boot
- Reading in the bath
- Reading in the bed
- Laughing with Tony every single day
- Etc.
- Etc.
- Etc.
Yes, there are Shiny Things I Wished I Got To…
Creating new episodes of the EFGO podcast and finishing my book. Or rather, writing my book since there’s an awful lot of brain-dump going on in those chapters.
Yet funnily enough, there are no Wished I Got Tos in the Subtle category. I am very thankful about that.
This is why Every Family’s Got One, this community, is so meaningful to me. Hearing people share the seemingly smaller moments of their lives that connect with others is a big shiny deal. This is what binds us, reminds each of us that our lives, our stories can make all the difference.
So, here’s to you, Family.
